Attachment theory is the theory that humans are born with a need to form a close emotional bond with a caregiver and that such a bond will develop during the first six months of a child’s life if the caregiver is appropriately responsive. Bowlby (1958) proposed that attachment can be understood within an evolutionary context in that the caregiver provides safety and security for the infant. Attachment bonds that are created during infancy tend to impact someone’s life into adulthood. Parents can foster a healthy relationship in the first two years of a child in very different way such as being involved and showing consistency. Letting the child know that you will give them the time a day after work or in the evenings, to play with them , sing with them and showing that they can count on you being present. Another way to foster a healthy relationship is to being responsive to their needs. Showing up when they cry, fall or need help. One can help them gain trust and be able to depend on another individual which will have an impact in future relationships. Strategies that caregivers can use to ensure infants and toddlers attain a securely attached relationship, would include communication, responsiveness, being empathetic, and modeling good behavior. One has to ensure that the child feels comfortable, safe and protected, in order to thrive.
